It Takes a Community

Aside from the hard work of creating, framing and displaying visual artwork, an artist is faced with this challenge: getting the word out.  I am thankful to live in a community receptive to up-and-coming artists. With some effort on our part, my show mates and I did our best to “talk up” our senior art exhibition by approaching local magazines, radio stations and organizations with consistent voices in current news and local events.

Thank you to Jayne Jackson for interviewing us on her noontime radio show WLEZ 98.1FM.

And to Mississippi Museum of Art‘s Julian Rankin for stopping by the opening reception and writing a becoming review of the works on display.

In Progress

Here are some shots of a sculpture I’ve been working on. One of my greatest challenges with this piece is adhering the melted plastic to the piece of wood. The two different materials seem to have a less sticktoitive relationship than the previous sculpture.

I’ve had to adjust my “sewing” method: a process of heating the plastic and weaving it in and out of the crevasses and cracks of the wood with a awl (a very pointy, metal tool suggested by my grandfather).

After it is complete my next hurdle will be deciding how to display the sculpture for it is attractive on all sides.
